GTLNC Gets Dirty
July 30, 2006
On Sunday, at 7:00AM, twenty one volunteers showed up to improve our neighbhorhood.
Allow me to recap and to acknowledge the "Players!"
Last week, we had 16 volunteers who trimmed and trussed and dug and pick axed D.G. (decomposed granite....concrete!) and swept and planted and watered and bagged debris for 17 trees!
This week, 21 people were raring to go! And learning from experience and thanks to Sharyn Romano and a small team from HLABT - the 10 remaining D.G. wells were jack hammered and removed before hand!!!! Yay! Jim Carroll (Barbara's better half and my new best friend!) and Jeff Peter were thrilled to be relieved of the back breaking task so I pointed Jim west on Riverside drive to prune and remove nursery stakes and generally give a lot of TLC to all the new trees we planted on Riverside! He was in heaven! But the job was daunting and we need to make a date to finish the job, Jim.....next....ok, 2 weeks????
Gene Elerding, again, worked up a sweat taking on the the "north side of Forman!" Four hours later ( with added help from Peter Hartz and John Moskal - only after they had planted around Wells Fargo) the job was complete. Immaculate! But we still need to find a solution to the weeds....any thoughts?
Rhoda Minger (Chamber)and her husband Emory led the troops in front of the Packaging Store from Sancola to Forman with help from Paige Peter( one of the organizers) and Shelly and Audrey ( Garden Club).
Barbara Carroll could be seen hoisting 50 lb. bags of pepples as she cleaned and refilled the tree wells on the north side of Forman between Talofa and Mariota. Shirley Duenckel, also one of the organizers, worked hard (as usual!) and the Garden Club supplied drinks and snacks last week while the Chamber did the honors this week. And Reyn and Cathy Saliba ans Shana and Pat Lobinger.....
And special mention goes to our Midtown NoHo friends, Diann Corral and Kristine Eide who showed up 2 weeks in a row at 7 AM - this time Diann brought her 2 daughters and were some of the last to leave! Thank you, guys!
A very special thanks goes to Nancy Nickerson (Monet's Garden) who ordered all the materials and got her hands dirty! To my husband, Andrew, who never complained about getting up at 5:15 AM the last 2 weeks! And to Richard Bogy who was always the first one there to offer a hand and help in more ways than I can list. And Alice Roth who is always willing to say "yes" and help and participate in any way she can. Even Rob Benevidez showed up today, siren and all!
Riverside looks great! Let's all make sure the trees and flowers are cared for and treated with respect!. A cared for community is one with less crime. Let's all do our share to keep our community beautiful and safe.
Thanks, everybody!
